When we arrived at the workshop, Ceres set the transmitter pearl she’d received from Lynée down next to the Heaven’s Stiletto.

“Hmm… This kind of sword, eh? No weapon for a soldier—only those with certain jobs can wield something like this. Are you sure this is the one?”

As a Rearguard, there wasn’t any weapon or armor that I couldn’t equip. But unless the weapon itself supported me as I wielded it, like Murakumo did, I couldn’t hold a candle to any of the jobs that usually equipped it. Whenever possible, I wanted to make sure that weapons got into the hands of the party members who could use them best.

If none of our party members could equip the stiletto, we’d have had to search for a new Sorcery Tool to act as a base for a Curse Eater weapon. But with Madoka looking into it for us, we were able to determine the correct job for the gear.

“As a Rogue, Theresia can equip weapons like this one.”

“In that case, we’ll definitely need her with us to defeat the Simian Lord… Then again, participating in that battle—or getting close to the Simian Lord at all—might not be something Theresia can handle now…”

Elitia’s misgivings made perfect sense. Theresia had attacked me before; the possibility remained that she might do it again if we fought the Simian Lord. The monster might well influence the corrosive progress of her hex. Given how far it had progressed already, there was a risk that she could instantaneously fall under the Simian Lord’s control. With that in mind, it seemed clear that keeping Theresia in a safe location should be our top priority.

“With a Curse Eater weapon equipped, she’s certain to land a hit. The question is, will Theresia be able stay on, you know, the right side long enough to do so?”

“……”

Theresia nodded at Ceres’s question.

“As an outsider who hasn’t known Theresia very long…I may have underestimated the strength of her feelings for you and your party, Arihito. But I can see clearly now. Those feelings will come in handy warding off the ill effects of the curse—at least at its worst.”

“…Lynée, what exactly do you mean by warding off…?”

“I’m something of a hex worker myself, you know. I happen to know a few countermeasures for hexes. Consider my skills as a sort of insurance. I can’t stop the hex from corroding her further, but I can make it inflict status ailments less frequently.”
